Installation for the exhibition "Vom Verbergen" in the Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt am Main
A Phyxis is one of those bizarre things that are occasionally placed in tabernacles: the mobile and yet manifest miniature safe for the consecrated hosts. For the installation I was allowed to use one of these centuries-old gems, in this case a miniature of the Holy Sepulchre. In the case of a former common altar boy and the liturgical service pseudo-devoted, this type of container immediately triggers a round of associations. There are these faces, marked by a consuming desire that is laboriously suppressed only by contemplative hand folding. Hardly a moment later, there are these chameleon-like, jumping out trains to be seen. For an adolescent like me, this is an almost traumatizing perspective. You hold this stupid miniature tray under the chin of the tongue protagonist and hope that the priest will hit the taste-sensitive papillary zone on this slippery thing. All tongue-exhibitionists who want to know the secret of faith. I directly implemented this image in the installation and locked the phyxis in a leaky cell, which stages collective desire as a tongue grid, with the controversial "pro multis" in front of the door. For the Catholic Church it is an essential theological question whether the individual Christ died for all or only for many.
